UW-Madison Graduate Level
Permalink

Let me start with a caveat here: Ive only been in my position at UW-Madison for a year and am still getting to know whats being done, never mind whether it is being done well. I help head up the masters professional-track journalism program. As far as I can tell, our students have the opportunity at the graduate level to learn a lot about new media theory, have graduate-level (communication) research classes that incorporate databases, statistics, web experiments and other technical skills, and have access to computer labs packed with software like graphics programs as well as multimedia equipment such as audio recorders and cameras. Our grad students choose a specialty and are encouraged to customize their program. This includes taking undergraduate journalism classes such as electronic publishing or classes in the computer science department. In the School as a whole, we do not teach tracks of journalism, but rather, storytelling across platforms. All of this seems to be working well. I am going to let my colleague Katy Culver, who will be attending Poynter with me next week, discuss the undergrad program.
