What your guest faculty friend hopes to learn from you

You might be thinking I will be all teaching and no learning. But you would be mistaken if you thought that!

Every time I go into a newsroom or talk with educators from other journalism programs and schools, I always learn something new. One of the greatest benefits for me of attending AEJMC every summer is talking to journalism educators from other schools about what they are teaching and HOW they are teaching it.

Last year at this same Poynter seminar, I sat in every session and listened. I learned a lot about other people's approaches, ideas, and the challenges they face. Some of these gave me a new perspective on situations at my own college. I went back to work with a lot of new ideas. The value was immeasurable!

I have spent the last few months, studying syllabi from different courses and reading the debates about how multimedia skills should be taught. I  need some basic skill training, but most important I need to understand HOW to teach the skills and how to make them part of the core curriculum. I've concluded (okay, this week, I've concluded) that there should not be a stand alone multimedia course, but it has to be part of all that we do. Now, I need someone to help me figure out how to do that......
